Taking the World into My Own Hands
In Obama’s speech he stated “what would you do to change the world?” I’ve taken a lot of thought about this question over the past few years and have came up with a few solid ideas. I’ve always been a big impact person; I’ve been a part of many volunteer groups along with helping out anyone who needs that extra step or helping hand. But I’ve always wanted to be an impact on a larger more recognizable scale and this is why I chose my major and career. I chose to work in the science field but for the better of the economy and environment. I’ve chose to be an environmental journalist with a minor in geography. Basically I want to write up surveys and news articles about safe eco-friendly places to drill oil around the world. With a major in environmental science and journalism and a minor in geography I would be able to travel the world and write about peoples idea’s and concerns. This would help alert the rest of the world about problems that have been occurring in different areas. Thus connecting the world on a more global scale then a local scale. With my minor in geography I would be able to travel to desolate area’s and use my knowledge of rock and mineral science and topography and help determine safer eco-friendly area’s to drill oil after extensive data of course. But none of this would work without my credentials, once I finish my terms at Suffolk I plan on transferring to 1 of 5 schools. The Pennsylvania State University which is top 5 in the nation for its environmental studies, Colorado University of Boulder which is the most eco-friendly college and town in the country, either NYU or Fordham for their predigest Journalism and English programs, and last would be University of Auckland, New Zealand which is located in the most ecological diverse country in the world. I plan to finish my undergrad and one of these schools and proceed to move onto grad school. Once I finish grad school I hope to come out with an excellent internship or start up job. Although this will take many years and a lot of hard work, I look forward to the self-enjoyment it will bring me to help change the world in my own personal way.

Lauren,
ReplyDeleteWow you've got some great future plans here! It sounds like you might become involved as a field researcher. In what ways, specifically do you think your reseearch will benefit the planet? In other words, you mention researching eco-friendly places to drill for oil and I want you to be specific about the benefits of this. While they might seem obvious lets not assume that your audience will know. In addition, tell us more about how you became interested in this specific field of study.
Specifically my research would benefit the economy and not harm the environment. By finding eco friendly places to drill it will provide thousands of jobs and help the oil industry along with keeping an equal level with environmentalist around the world. For example when the United State began to drill in Alaska they didn't pay much attention to the environmental aspect since there was so much revenue coming from drilling. Drilling in Alaska could have nearly wiped out the entire eco system there before the right precautions were taken. I guess that my interests have always been known. I’ve always been involved with outside nature activities and have learned to love the natural elements on this planet. I’ve also been involved in large scale operations of cleaning up beaches, park and have also traveled to New Orleans several times for Hurricane Relief work. Over the past 2-3 years I’ve found myself enjoying writing more and more so I thought why not put to and to together and make a joint career? I also did some research and this career pays excellent money. So I think of it this way, I’ll be traveling, writing, making money, helping to save the environment, and I’ll be creating jobs around the world. Sounds pretty fun to me if I’m up for all the hard work!
