I'd like you to take a couple of minutes to pause and consider where you are or where you need to be to accomplish project 1. Answer the following:
1. Where are you in the process of working on project one? Be specific here. Do you think you have some rough notes, a well thought out draft, a polished near complete draft or perhaps something else?
2. Further, explain what challenges/successes you're having in developing a clear and valuable project.
1. Currently I think I am in a good stage for project one. I have a solid cover letter.I also have the major points I want to mention in my resume. I have to get a definite rough draft down.
ReplyDelete2. One challenge I have is I feel like I'm repeating myself a lot. Although one success I have is a good work ethic but those are the points I feel like I keep repeating.I have alot of experience in what I am technically "applying" for, but I feel like I can't make that clear.
Project one is moving along well. I had it complete before before I signed up for this course. I had several cover letters and 2 resumes. For this cover letter I went back to the letter that was closest and modified it .
ReplyDeleteThe chalenge was to blend my last life with the current one. I penned this letter for a job that was a hybrid of the old and new careers.
My cover letter is still in the rough draft. My target audience has been identified but the body paragraph needs work. I am having trouble with applying my BA in English to my current career goals and past work experiences. They do not correlate.
ReplyDeleteThe success I did have with project one pertains to the qualifications needed. What specifically are employers looking for. I have a better idea of the course work needed.
For project one, its coming together really well, having rough ideas, brainstorm and rough drafts has been very helpful in the completion of the project. Also what I found very helpful was to draft a rough copy and have Prof Leo go over it and made suggestions on how to improve it. The text book was very instrumental too, it had procedures and examples of what a cover letter should look like.
ReplyDeleteI am having great success with developing clear ideas because Prof Leo has been very instrumental with materials been covered. It has been a great help and guideline on how to put together a valuable project.
I think my rough draft is right on track. I wouldn’t say its complete, it might need a few more details and a little more organization but the majority of the cover letter is good. The challenge i had writing the cover letter was writing about my job history because i have been working at the same job since i was 16, so it was kind of hard to write alot on that part.
ReplyDeleteProject one for me is still in its opening phases. The draft that I wrote was no more than rough notes, not the well written document that I intend to finish with. I did not know that the letter format stated to use single spaces in the letter, leaving me with roughly half of the information and writing space than what I am allowed to have. This is great for me because I tend to be a bit long-winded, especially when it comes to writing about my own abilities, I have to admit.
ReplyDeleteChallenges I have had thus far are mostly my inability to properly gauge my own strengths and abilities without coming off as arrogant. I am not arrogant in the slightest normally; I merely am not used to writing about my strengths in a humble manner. It is an art form that I am excited to learn, as I do not want to come off as having a giant ego in everything that I write in life. What has gone great for me so far is how well I know myself, meaning all of the strengths and weaknesses I may have in a job situation.
Tom,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like having a previous resume and cover letter worked good for you. I know we talked a bit about integrating previous experiences into this new resume and I think you have a good handle on it. Let me know if anything comes up.
David,
ReplyDeleteI hope our conversation last week helped you rethink the value your BA in English can be. Remember that a part of that degree asks you to hone in on your communication skills which is a valuable resource as an employee. Focus on the general skills you learned.
Afisi,
ReplyDeleteI cannot take any credit for your resume. You did what I suggest all students do and that is to draft out a project early. I'm glad the text was a good resource and I'm looking forward to reading through your project 1 materials.
Kristie,
ReplyDeleteI could see where this project might be a challenge but I would consider the general skills that one job has helped you develop. Maybe it is good communication, collaboration, paying attention to detail etc. Think about those skills and use them to explain how they will help you in the job.
Josh,
ReplyDeleteHaving more in my opinion is better than having less. When you have more ideas it is easier to sift through them and find the gems. I can see that you're concerned about being too over confident and that is why it is valuable to have peers, your instructor and perhaps professionals in the field look these materials over. I'm looking forward to reading your project 1 and offering you feedback.
