Changing the world
President obama in his State of the Union address gave a call to action to change the world. With my field of study I think i can have a direct impact on changing the world. My field of study is in political science. I study the way our government works. One day i hope to change the way our government works together. In my eyes our system is broken. Obama sees it also. Every single issue is a constant struggle between the right and the left. I mean we couldn't even pass a healthcare bill that would give 9/11 first responders free healthcare without a huge fight in congress. I want to get into government so I can find a way to somehow reconcile the differences between the right and the left. I feel if we can somehow find a way to make the right and the left agree more easily then essential legislation during a presidency could be passed. There are certain practices in the government that I feel impede the progress of our country. One such practice is the filibuster. The filibuster is when a senator in congress talks a bill to death. It is a constant debate on the issue at hand so the bill can never be called to a vote. If we can change this and some other practices in government, our country will be able to move forward in ways we have never been able to before. This will make our country stronger in the world and hopefully we can retake our spot as the worlds super power. We are no longer the worlds super power our spot has been taken by china. We need to make it easier to pass legislation in our country or China will continue to be the worlds super power. I feel if i went into government i would be able to change the government in some way which, will hopefully change the world.

Ryan, you do a good job explaining the filibuster and I'm wondering what ways do you think we can change this practices? In other words, what do you see as an alternative?
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I believe we just need to omit the filibuster from the daily goings on of congress. It only impedes progress. The filibuster does nothing to help government. It only helps the party who doesn't like bill. This is just a product of party politics. We need to get rid of this practice so we can get away from party politics during congressional sessions. If we get rid of the filibuster more bills will be put to vote and our country can move forward on certain issues instead of bacwards.
